Almost everyone meets the Alps in winter. The guests who come back in July tend to describe it as discovering a second country hidden inside the first.
What changes
The pace, mostly. Summer days start early and slow down: a long walk before the heat, lunch on a terrace, an afternoon by the water, dinner outside at nine.
Resorts empty out. The same village that hosts twenty thousand skiers in February holds a fraction of that in June, and the chalets cost a good deal less.
What to do
High-alpine hiking, e-biking, via ferrata, paragliding, lake swimming and the mountain restaurants that stay open through the warm months. For families, it is the easiest active holiday there is.
